Day 23 — I need to run faster

Day: 23
Miles: 3
Time: 37:21 minutes
Feeling: Sheepish

I’ve got to figure out a better way to do this whole running thing. It’s just taking entirely too much time out of my life.

So, last night, I had plans. I went downstairs to the gym and chatted with some friends got straight to my workout. Even running at a moderate pace — about a 12 minute mile for me — it was still taking me, well, 12 minutes to run a mile. And I was supposed to do 5 miles. That’s an hour of just running! Not including stretch and water breaks.

I did do well with the miles I did do though. I ran each  mile nonstop, pausing at the mile markers to grab water (and in the case of mile 1, to stretch). I’m not completely off schedule either. Wednesday was supposed to be a 5 mile day, obviously, but Thursday is a 3 mile day. So my plan is to do my 5 mile run tonight after practice.

Also, I told G.D. that I would start doing my treadmill runs at an incline of 1.0 to more accurately simulate running outside. Well, I didn’t. My thinking originally was I wanted to run my 5 miles nonstop, so I wasn’t going to do the incline as a way to manufacture motivation. Then, I flaked and only did three. So I felt bad about not including the incline for that amount. But miles that have been run, can’t be unrun. I’m running my five miles today, so  no incline, but maybe tomorrow, when I do my two miles, I’ll either run at an incline or just run the hills that are my neighborhood.

Either way, I’m going to make up for it and starting next week, I’m going to start including inclines in my workout. I feel like I might regret telling you guys this next week. But we’ll deal with that later.

Cool thing I did yesterday though, was learn a new strength training machine. Maria was kind enough to show me the pull up machine (I think that’s what it’s called) and after a shaky start (I’m afraid of heights) I was able to pull up and push up nicely. So I’ll be adding that to my currently nonexistant strength training regime. Thanks, Maria!

A note: I need new socks too.

I’m going to miss the apparel clinic at Rhode Runner tonight most likely, but the guys there are really helpful. I didn’t buy socks last time I went there (to get running pants) because really, I think i’m mentally opposed to buying running socks when I felt like I already had perfectly good tube socks at home. I bought a pair for my 5k last year and I didn’t really notice a difference. So I’ve been running in my cotton socks, like normal people.

I think my pinky toe is going to stage a rebellion.

As I run, I can feel it — and my middle toe — rubbing up against the sock and I see now the error of my ways. That’s going to cause problems if I don’t get the right socks (a fact that coworkers have attested to — apparently, that rubbing turns into blisters and makes miles REALLY painful). So I’m going to try to stop by this afternoon and pick up some socks before my 5 miler. But if I don’t make it, I’ll make it a priority tomorrow morning.

the incline thing is a really, really big adjustment, though it doesn’t seem it. moving to 1.0 affects your posture, your breathing, everything.

will this 5-miler be your longest run so far?

Yeah, when I was doing the 5k last year, I’d do the treadmill with 1.0 incline. That’s why I was hesitant to put the incline in on my 5 mile run (I didn’t need the extra resistance). So I’m not looking forward to adding it at all.

I did five miles on Sunday — though it was a spotty 5 miles. So I’ll do 5 today, two tomorrow, three on Saturday (I think) and then I’m running six miles on Sunday.
